A roof edge detail should be installed as specified by the designer at all flat edges of the roof where the field membrane ends and at internal and external gutters.
Without a drip edge water may end up beneath the shingles and may cause damage to various parts of the home.

Drip edges are metal sheets usually shaped like an l installed at the edge of the roof.
In all cases it is important to properly detail and install the edge conditions.
Also called drip edge flashing or d metal they serve a vital function by directing water away from the fascia and into the gutter.
This lets any water that gets on the roof run down the underlayment and over the drip edge.

These edges are built up using a triangular fillet of timber and a higher fascia board with a felt lip overhanging to prevent any rain water from going over the edge see edge detail 2.
Traditional asphalt impregnated felt roofing like that in our sketch above is installed overlapped a minimum of 2 3 inches single coverage or overlapped half its width or 16 inches double coverage or overlapped 2 3 its width to give a 12 inch exposure and a 3 ply roof or 3 4 of its width to give a 9 inch exposure and a 4 ply roof.
Always try to carry membrane felts over or up and over and down to ensure the roof membrane will always drain free and clear of any adjacent system.
